UpBeat workshop

Raising awareness and preventing Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels. It includes all heart and circulatory diseases, including coronary heart disease, angina, heart attack, congenital heart disease, hypertension, stroke and vascular dementia.

This free, two-hour complementary prevention workshop aims to aid understanding of the risk factors for CVD: how they can be identified and where they can be modified with simple lifestyle changes. We will supplement your attendance with a personal one-to-one Wellbeing Assessment and an NHS Health Check, if eligible. We will also provide onward referral and signposting to those services best suited to help you live your best life.

Quick Facts

  • CVD affects around seven million people in the UK and is a significant cause of disability and death.
  • It is responsible for one in four premature deaths in the UK and accounts for the largest gap in health-life expectancy (those in the most deprived 10% of the population are almost twice as likely to die as a result of CVD, than those in the least deprived 10%).
  • You are more at risk of having CVD if you have atrial fibrillation (AF), high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. These are known as the ‘high risk conditions'.
  • You are more at risk of CVD if you have diabetes or a family history of heart disease, if you are a smoker, or are from a black, Asian, minority ethnic background.

Feedback

Below is feedback received from people who have attended the workshop:

The Upbeat session I attended was really well delivered and interesting and made a lot of sense to me.

I appreciate you taking the time for a telephone call yesterday & referring me for medical exercise, whom I heard from the very same day.
